During its Synod Meeting on 25th June, 2022 members of the Synod voted Rev Peter Morel as the next Moderator of the Uniting Church in South Australia. He will be Moderator Elect until he is installed as Moderator in 12 months’ time.
Peter thanked the Synod saying, ‘I am very grateful for the affirmation of the Uniting Church Synod, in being elected, and subsequently becoming the next Moderator. I come to you having taken on this call with an attitude of surrender to God’s guidance, reaffirming that we hear God’s call through the voice of the church.
Rev Morel comes to this role with extensive experience across the church, having been in congregational ministry in both the Eyre Peninsula (Tumby Bay) and the Adelaide Hills (Balhannah). ‘I have a great desire to strengthen relationships with rural congregations across the state,’ said Peter.
He also has extensive experience with local and international mission initiatives and is currently in his 14th year as Coordinating Chaplain at St Andrew’s Hospital in the Adelaide CBD.
Peter reflected on his chaplaincy role, which gives him a wonderful opportunity to engage with a diverse population. He is aware of the suffering in our community, at the same time noting that there is also joy and a need for celebration.
Peter affirms that chaplaincy has changed him, in that it has expanded and broadened his experience of how God is working in the world and how he is able to embody the Gospel, called to work at all levels in the hospital community, whilst continuing to value each and every role in the community.
‘As Moderator, I want to offer pastoral support across the Synod; to deepen the relationship with Congress; and to spend the time needed to be in relationship with all. I have been involved with many committees and councils of the church and believe I have the skills to lead and hopefully to be a person of joy and hope.’
Peter offers himself to the ministry that we all share and to the ministry of Moderator with passion.
‘It goes without saying that this is a new area of ministry for me, which will draw upon the gifts and skills in which I have grown, through both congregational and chaplaincy experience. I look forward to this next period of leadership within the Uniting Church in South Australia.’
As Peter said in his statement to the Synod, he hopes to bring pastoral and spiritual leadership within the context of joy-filled relationships that come from who we are as followers of Jesus Christ.
‘I look forward to many new, and different connections across South Australian churches and the wider community. I value the theme of being seriously joyful and joyfully serious - and present,’ said Peter.
(Peter would also like to add that he is a somewhat besotted grandfather of a one year old grand-daughter!)
The Uniting Church in South Australia congratulates and welcomes Rev Peter Morel to the role of Moderator-Elect.
