Three weeks to go to Pancake Day 2023!

The annual Pancake Day Appeal provides an opportunity to support the work of UnitingCare organisations across South Australia.

‘I have always been amazed by the generosity of Uniting Church congregations and the wider community in responding to specific appeals and needs in the community. Pancake Day is an ideal opportunity to focus that support and energy,’ said Mark Waters, the new Director of UnitingCare SA.

‘With the Pancake Day Appeal in its 32nd year, you would like to think that the need for food and practical support was becoming less. Unfortunately, due to the cost-of-living pressures and income support falling behind the rate of inflation, our services are seeing an increase in demand, often from people who never thought that they would need to access such services,’ said Mark.

Mark comes to his new role having worked in the community sector for the past four decades. Some years previously, he worked for UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide (now UnitingSA) in its mental health employment programs (Employment Access). His last two roles were as the State Manager of Reconciliation South Australia and the Executive Director of Palliative Care South Australia.

He has also been a member of local Uniting Church congregations, with his home church being Brougham Place Uniting Church, North Adelaide where he enjoys being a member of their Social Justice and Action Group as well as singing in the choir.

Some of the organisations which are supported through Pancake Day are the emergency relief centres which operate across the Uniting Church and are linked with congregations. Many of them were initially established in response to COVID-19 and designated as UnitingCare Emergency Relief Centres to meet the criteria of essential services under the Emergency Management Act, and have kept operating with the support of their local congregations and communities.

Through the Pancake Day Appeal, you can support the specific UnitingCare organisation of your choice, or your funds can be shared among all of the organisations which benefit from the Appeal.

Your financial support will go to organisations including the following emergency relief centres:
