A summary of the discussions, deliberations and decisions arising from the meeting of the Uniting Church in South Australia, Synod Standing Committee.

Assembly President Sharon Hollis and Assembly General Secretary Colleen Geyer gave a short presentation on the Act2 paper ‘Considering Afresh Our Life Together,’ Synod Standing Committee then shared their reflections and considered specific questions around how they see the Act2 project intersecting with the work of the Synod and what does Act2 need to pay attention to?

General Secretarys Report

Rev Dr Adrian Brown has been appointed as Interim UnitingCare SA Liaison Officer 0.6FTE for a period of 6 months.

Associate General Secretary’s Report

  • The Presbytery Restructure Review Task Group brought an Interim Report to the meeting as they look to the final report being presented at the Synod meeting in June.
  • Generate Presbytery decisions that were noted by Synod Standing Committee included:
    • Streaky Bay Congregation have been recognised as a Faith Community from 1st January 2022.
    • Freedom Uniting Church, Paralowie has been dissolved and ceased to be recognised from 17th November 2021.
    • A second campus has been recognised at the former Freedom Uniting Church Paralowie as a faith community and a new church plant under the oversight of Parafield Gardens UC from 17th November 2021. Reg 3.9.2.(a)
  • June Synod Meeting. The in person portion will be held from 8.30am to 5.30pm on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June at the Adelaide Hills Convention Centre, Hahndorf.
  • The Annual Celebration of Ministry Service will be held on Sunday 31st July 2022 at a venue yet to be determined.
  • Yorke Peninsula Restructure Task Group have brought a report and recommendations to Synod Standing Committee. These included designating the seventeen congregations and faith communities on Yorke Peninsula as a Parish Mission to be named the Yorke Peninsula Regional Mission under Regulation 3.9 (Alternative Local Church Structures).
  • The Moderators Nominating Committee is continuing their work.

UnitingCare SA

  • Amendments to the constitution of St Andrew’s Hospital.
  • Appointments to boards and committees of the Council of Annesley College, Resthaven Inc. and Pilgrim School/

Mission and Leadership Development Board

Updates were given to various aspects of the future of the Uniting College for Leadership and Theology (UCLT) and staffing including:

  • Rev Dr Sean Gilbert, Lecturer in Ministry Practise moving to full time from 1st March 2022
  • Receiving the Position Description for both the Executive Officer, Mission Leadership and Development (0.5FTE) and for the Academic Dean (1.0FTE)
  • The progress on appointing a Principal.
