At 11am on Wednesday 11 November, people across Adelaide respected a minute’s silence to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving their country. Buglers sounded the Last Post at locations across the Adelaide CBD – at West Terrace Cemetery, Victoria Square, King William Street, outside Telstra House on Pirie Street, and at the National War Memorial.

Uniting Church SA defence chaplain, Rev Sue Page, led the South Australian Remembrance Day service at the National War Memorial on North Terrace in Adelaide – the first South Australian female chaplain invited to do so.

A large group of people gathered for the service at the North Terrace memorial, many bearing red poppy pins, to pay their respects to the fallen. Rev Sue Page opened the service with scripture, reminding the gathering of God’s love, before leading a prayer of thanks for those who gave their lives in the service of freedom.

A representative from the RSL (Returned and Services League) in South Australia invited special guests to lay wreaths at the foot of the memorial – these included Premier Jay Weatherill, State Liberal leader Steven Marshall, Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese, South Australian Governor Hieu Van Le, Director of Veterans SA Rob Manton, and the Chairman of the Veterans’ Advisory Council for Governor Sir Eric Neal AC.

Sue closed the North Terrace proceedings with prayer and a benediction, encouraging those gathered to go in peace.

Many commended Sue on the sensitive and skilful way she led the service.
