Reflection of the Week - 17 September 2019

Throughout the Bible, we see God's concern for social justice.

He commands his people to have compassion; to look after the sick, those who have little, and those who were suffering injustice.

'Then the righteous will answer him, saying,

'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?

And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?

And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?'

And the King will answer them,

'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'

Matthew 25:37 - 40

God's word is challenging. It forces us to look outside our own word, our own bubble of comfort, to seek to meet the needs of others, and to do so with gladness.

Social Justice Sunday, on 25 September, brings attention to the many people in this world who still suffer gross injustice.

Sometimes the injustice comes purely because someone was born the 'wrong' gender, and valued less. Or they are born into poverty. Or Governments fail to fulfil their duty and exploit the people they are meant to serve.

Whatever social injustice there is in the world, Christians are called to speak out, and, more importantly, act to restore justice.

Lord, open my eyes to the injustices around me, in my own world.

May you cause my heart to be moved to action, not wallow in indifference and apathy.

Lord, may I view people the way you do: worthy of all love and compassion.

And may I remember that whatever I do for the least of the people around, I do for you.

Amen.
