Reflection of the week

Every day, in the morning papers and other media, I am confronted by bad news; threats to my peace of mind. Some negative news in my mailbox adds fuel to my fear. In the words of an old hymn, “I sink in life’s alarms”.

“But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” – Matthew 14:30

Sometimes it only takes a moment for fear to take hold. In a moment of fear, trust and confidence in Jesus is forgotten. Unless I keep my gaze fixed firmly on his powerful presence, fear will paralyse me into inaction. I sink beneath the waves of doubt and fear. Peter’s plea becomes mine, and I say, “Lord, save me”. It only takes a moment to turn my troubled eyes upon Jesus and be rescued.

Lord, still the waves of worry and fear in my heart, with the assurance of your loving presence. Renew in me, the confidence to trust in your power to cast out fear. Amen.

It’s unfortunate that we lost the bread and fish ritual meal, because the bread and wine ritual meal didn’t emphasize this idea of surplus: real food that actually fed the poor.

Reflection of the Week - 27 May 2025

No matter the religion or denomination in which we are raised, our spirituality still comes through the first filter of our own life experience. We must begin to be honest about this instead of pretending that any of us are formed exclusively by scriptures or our churches or religious traditions. There is no such thing as an entirely unbiased position. The best we can do is own and be honest about our own filters. God allows and invites us to trust our own experience.
