This year we are getting back to enjoying ourselves (in a COVID-safe way, of course). Just in time for Pancake Day on 16^th February! It’s the perfect time to get together and to raise funds for UnitingCare SA. And we all deserve a treat.

Sadly, in South Australia there are a lot of people that are not able to make ends meet and they rely on UnitingCare Emergency Relief Centres and other services to help provide food for their families, among other things. Researchers (including a team from the Australian National University) have forecast that the end of the JobSeeker supplement and JobKeeper will result in hundreds of thousands of people being pushed into poverty.

This year help us to support them by hosting a Pancake Day event or making a donation.

Since 2004, Pancake Day events have raised funds for UnitingCare organisations that provide financial and food relief to people in need, as well as aged care, hospital and community service organisations associated with the Uniting Church.

In 2020, and in response to the COVID‑19 situation, 8 new congregations discerned a calling to join the existing network of UnitingCare Emergency Relief Centres. By the end of the year, the 13 Emergency Relief Centres provided over 100,000 instances of assistance – mainly food hampers and prepared meals.

During the last year, all organisations have worked very hard to meet the challenges presented by COVID. Operating safely to protect their staff, clients and communities has incurred extra costs, for example, additional PPE was necessary, as well as modifications to the service areas in many cases.

Pancake Day events can be held any time during February and March, in the lead up to Easter.

Events can be made COVID-safe through a variety of ways such as distancing people, using appropriate food handling procedures and not sharing utensils. You could also be creative by not actually having pancakes – perhaps you could have other individually wrapped treats instead of pancakes this year.
