Exciting news!

The South Australian Council of Churches has announced that Candace Champion will participate in the World Council of Churches Conference on “Reconciliation Processes in Indigenous Contexts” in Trondheim, Norway, on 20-21 June. The conference will centre on two thematic focusses – “Truth and Healing” and “Reconciliation and Transformation” – and will be hosted by the Sami Church Council (Church of Norway). We pray for Candace as she takes to this important gathering the experience of being a young adult leader in the Uniting Church and a member of UAICC SA.

Free music recitals

A free Thursday lunchtime recital series to provide performance experience for students and recent graduates of the Elder Conservatorium of Music has recently been launched by Pilgrim Uniting Church in the city. In addition to providing the use of its venue, the church also pays for the performer’s accompanist and undertakes promotion activities. The young musicians really appreciate the chance to present their own recital program, take the performances very seriously, and musical standards have been extremely high. Pilgrim Church has a long tradition of fine music, and by funding this initiative hopes it can play a part in nurturing and encouraging Adelaide’s young musicians.

The next performer will be baritone Anthony Zatorski, who is an honours student at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He will be performing works by Schubert, William Bolcom and John Cage at 1pm on Thursday 2 June at Pilgrim Uniting Church (12 Flinders Street, Adelaide).

Community events

A couple of upcoming community events may be of interest to Uniting Church SA members.

The first of these is a rally and march to urge the government to close Manus and Nauru, and bring asylum seekers and refugees here. The event will begin at Parliament House in Adelaide from 12noon on Saturday 25 June. More information will be made available on the Standing with Refugees Facebook page.

The second event is the SA Unions Women’s Policy Forum featuring a panel of four female leaders who will discuss issues important to women in the lead-up to the July Federal Election. Issues covered will include domestic violence, Medicare, penalty rates, education, childcare and more. It will be held at Adelaide West Uniting Church (312 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Brooklyn Park) on Thursday 9 June at 6pm.
