Pastoral Notes

At the start of 2017, a new subscriber list was started for people wishing to receive Pastoral Notes. These emails from the Moderator mainly reflect on the lives and ministry of Uniting Church SA leaders who have recently passed away.

On Thursday 28 September, a notice was sent detailing the life and ministry of Elizabeth Finnegan who passed away on Sunday 24 September. Elizabeth served as the sixth Moderator of the SA Synod from 1987-89. She was the first lay person and the first woman to hold the office of Moderator. A memorial service for Elizabeth will be held at Clayton Wesley Uniting Church on Monday 27 November from 2pm. Read the note online here.

2017 Christmas postcards

Each year, the Uniting Church SA Christmas campaign helps our congregations and faith communities to communicate Christmas service and event details, to share an element of the Christmas story, and to raise awareness of the Uniting Church in the wider community.

Postcards and posters on this year's theme, "From love to life", are now available to order.

The front of the postcard depicts Mary and Jesus (please see the website for more detail/information). The back of the postcard includes the words of John 3:16 and a short message. Space has been left for Christmas service and event times, and an optional message from the congregation.

Orders close on Wednesday 18 October. For more information about the theme, costs and how to order, please click here. (Previous order close date was stated as Monday 30 October - this is actually the collection date. We apologise for any inconvenience.)

Act for Peace: Rohingya Crisis Appeal

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya families need help. Family homes, neighbourhoods and entire villages have been torched to the ground. People are being killed as they desperately try to flee for safety. Already, more than 400,000 people are estimated to have crossed the border in Bangladesh seeking refuge from the violence. With the number of people seeking sanctuary in Bangladesh set to increase to over 500,000 over the coming days, support is urgently needed. Amelia Koh- Butler, Chair: Worship and Liturgy Committee of the World Methodist Council

This month, Rev Dr Amelia Koh-Butler heads to Rome where she will Chair the Worship and Liturgy Committee of the World Methodist Council. The primary purpose of this committee is to encourage the study of liturgy and forms of worship. They seek to lead in the study of worship issues, such as language and culture, corporate and private worship, music and liturgy, cultural influences, and the development of new hymnals and resources – amongst many other things! Amelia has been instrumental in compiling a new music resource, which will be presented to the Pope. This is an exciting opportunity for a Uniting Church leader, and we pray for a fruitful meeting in Rome.
