News & Notices – 30 March 2021

Below are the news and notices from congregations, the Synod of South Australia and the wider Uniting Church for Tuesday, 30 March edition of UC e-News

Prayer Points for the week:

We pray:

  • For all people and communities impacted by the flooding across New South Wales and Queensland
  • For refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia to find safety and welcome
  • For this Easter weekend, let us have hearts of thankfulness for Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Let us have eyes that look upon God’s grace and rejoice in our salvation.

Easter 2021 messages from Australian church leaders

National church leaders from different denominations, including Uniting Church President Dr Deidre Palmer, have shared their Easter messages with the National Council of Churches. They are available to be read online here. Deidre’s video message will be available to view and download tomorrow, 31st March from the Assembly website (

Uniting Church in SA Moderator Bronte Wilson has also shared an Easter message video last week, which is available to view here. Another Easter message from Bronte will also appear in the Adelaide Advertiser on Good Friday.

Easter events

Uniting Church in SA congregations and faith communities have submitted their services and events to be listed on the Synod website here:

Check out the website to see a full list of Easter events happening this weekend.

If you would like your church events to be listed too, please forward your Easter event times to so we can post them on the website.

New COVID restrictions

We have been advised by the government of SA that further work is being done to provide clarity about the new COVID restrictions, which are:

  • The density requirement will move from 1 person per 2 sq meters to 3 people per 4 sq meters (equivalent to 75%)
  • The capacity for places of worship with fixed seating will increase from 75% to 100% provided attendees are wearing a mask

At the time of writing this UC eNews, there has not been any update from the government with finer details and practicalities of those changes, so we recommend churches plan their Easter services on the existing COVID restrictions which we have been operating under for quite some time. We will endeavour to keep you informed of any further changes issued by the government. We have been advised that new COVID Safe Plans will be automatically issued for those with an existing plan.

We thank you for your patience. We will provide information and advice as soon as it is available on our Synod website and Facebook page. For any enquiries, please contact Associate General Secretary Rev Sue Page on 8236 4217 or email

PreachFest is a 3-day festival created to inspire and enliven the craft, art and vocation of preaching across Australia.

Through the lens of COVID, political changes, environmental concerns, culture changes, local needs and the many other contextual realities of our time and place, we are going to explore some important questions:

What is the point of preaching? Is the art of preaching dead? Can preaching change anything?

PreachFest will be held on 1st June – 3rd June 2021, it will give the opportunity to hear other gifted preachers and teachers, to network and share resources. This event will provide a great opportunity for preachers to refine the art of preaching, fine-tune the ability to proclaim God's Good News in context, and be inspired and challenged by the array of teachers, leaders and preachers, in person (Sydney and Canberra) and online and other interactive portals.

Early bird registration is now open. More information is available at this link:

16th Assembly goes online

Due to continuing risk factors around COVID-19 the Uniting Church’s triennial Assembly meeting will take place online for the first time.

Members of the Assembly Standing Committee (ASC) took the historic decision at an extraordinary meeting on Saturday 30 January 2021.

‘Putting the safety and well-being of members of the 16th Assembly first was the key driver in this decision,’ said Assembly General Secretary Colleen Geyer.

As such, a shortened 16th Assembly will take place online from 17-18 July 2021 with a view to reconvening the Assembly meeting in 2022 when a face-to-face meeting is possible.
