The South Australian government has declared that from this Friday, August 21st, 2020 that all churches will need to appoint a COVID Marshal.

A COVID Marshal is required to promote and take practical steps ensuring that infection control practices e.g. frequent hand-washing, are followed by people involved in operations (patrons, employees and contractors).

Refugee and Migrant Sunday- 23 August 2020

Refugee and Migrant Sunday is a celebration of the contribution refugees and migrants make to Australia and the needs and hopes of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants worldwide. It is celebrated on (or around) the last Sunday of August each year.

Since July 2013 to the present it has been seven years and $7.6 billion later, new data compiled by the Refugee Council that shows hundreds are still suffering as a result of offshore detention. According to the Turn on Javascript!, three in ten Australians (29.7%) were born overseas.

Australia is now home to 25.6 million residents, 7.5 million of which were born overseas revealing that our nation is really a global epicentre of cultural diversity. Immigration is producing demographic change within the Australian Christian community and Australian churches are enriched and strengthened by migrant participation.

Rev Anne Hewitt, Executive Director SA Council of Churches/Churches Together SA, put together worship resources to use as part of a usual service, for personal reflection or for sharing in small groups. Further resources are available here compiled by Rev Sandy Boyce, Pilgrim Uniting Church Adelaide.

Earth Overshoot Day – 22 August 2020

Churches are coming together to toll their bells, light candles and hold prayer services to mark Earth Overshoot Day. The tolling bells warn of irreversible damage to places, plants and animals, and the life we love, indeed for God’s creation as we know it on earth – unless we turn from the destructive path that we have been following. Lighted candles help us to focus and pray.

This year Earth Overshoot Day will fall on 22 August. Click here for a one-page flyer with information on how to observe Earth Overshoot Day.

A Light of Peace Online Prayer Vigil

Last Saturday, 15th August, we were honoured to host a prayer vigil on Uniting Church in SA Facebook page for our brothers and sisters in Christ in South and North Korea. The 15th of August was Liberation Day in North and South Korea. It was on this day in 1945 that Korea achieved liberation after 36 years of occupation by Japanese colonial rule.

The 15th of August also marks the division of Korea into North and South. Saturday’s prayer vigil was an opportunity to acknowledge the Liberation Day. It was also a time to lay bare the wounds that are yet to heal by praying for peace on the Korean Peninsula. We joined the global Light of Peace prayer campaign to say ‘We Pray, Peace Now, End the War!’

You can still view the prayer vigil on Facebook and enter your prayers for the Korean Peninsula into the comments section.
