Join the UCA in Global Climate Action

UCA President Dr Deidre Palmer is encouraging all people of the Uniting Church to join the global climate strike on Friday, 20 September. This is three days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit. The strike for climate movement is encouraging workers around the world to down tools and spend the day demanding emergency action to tackle the climate crisis.

There is an event planned for 12 noon on 20 September in Victoria Square, Adelaide - Global Strike 4 Climate (associated with School Strike 4 Climate). See the Facebook event here.

How you can participate:
1.           Register here (it provides the UCA with an approximate estimate of how many people are taking part, which should help in convincing other influencers to join!)
2.           Spread the word.
3.           Print out a big Uniting Church logo to carry – or add it to your own placard or banner with your climate action message. More details will be advised soon of any downloadable templates that may be designed specifically for this purpose.
4.           Show solidarity - Wear a brightly coloured ‘Pacifika’ style shirt to show your solidarity with our fragile Pacific Island neighbours, and/or an Akubra to show solidarity with the drought-stricken Australian bush.
5.           Show up!

From the Moderator: Vale John Rooke

“It has come to my attention that the Rev John Rooke has passed away on 29 July 2019.  John was ordained in 1984 and served with Correctional services from January 1985 to December 1989. He then moved to Southern Yorke where he ministered until September 1998.  Since that time, John has taken a Leave of Absence from Ministry.  I believe his funeral was held last Friday, but have no further information.  Please keep his wife Kay and their wider family in your prayers.”

Uniting Communities and Maggie Beer

ABC’s 730 Report featured a story last week on the challenges of providing interesting food with the right nutrition in aged care homes across Australia. Uniting Communities Aldersgate Aged Care home in Adelaide recently benefited from Maggie Beer’s cooking workshop. The training covered modified diets and being able to come up with specialised meals for people, particularly when they had swallowing issues.

Mell Ottaway, Executive Manager at Aldersgate, is interviewed in the story about their focus on providing good quality food that is essential to the health and wellbeing of the elderly.
