Below are the news and notices from congregations, the SA Synod and the wider Uniting Church submitted for the Wednesday 29 August edition of UC e-News.

Australian Modern Slavery Act Lobby Lab

Australian Parliament is debating the Australian Modern Slavery Act. This Act could help free and prevent thousands of people from slavery. It may be surprising to learn that modern slavery exists in Australia. Our politicians need to know we care about this. Fuzz Kitto, Carolyn Kitto and former Senator Skye Kakoschke-Moore are offering a Lobby Lab to introduce the Act and provide an opportunity for you to learn how to contact, talk with, and make your voice heard with MP's and Senators. This free session will be held at Pilgrim Uniting Church (12 Flinders Street, Adelaide) on Thursday 30 August from 6-7:30pm.

Kids off Nauru – sign the petition

Add your voice to the call to get #KidsOffNauru. When large numbers of people in our community speak out, the government listens. Details of the petitions can be found on the National Councils of Churches in Australia website.

Right-side-up Christmas

The Centre for Music, Liturgy and the Arts (CMLA) will hold a resource and planning event to explore an Aussie Advent and Christmas. Susan Burt, Coordinating Editor for Seasons of the Spirit, will lead participants in an exploration of sounds, moods and colours of the season and the themes arising within scripture. Together you will form ideas for worship planning including space setting, drama, music, poetry and prayers. Right-side-up Christmas will occur on Saturday 18 September, 7.30pm at Christ church, Wayville. Cost is $10 per person or $50 per congregation (payment at door). For questions email Turn on Javascript! or call Jenni on 0422 539 028.

Act for Peace – Christmas Bowl

As the end of the year is quickly approaching churches are being urged to begin planning now for the Christmas Bowl appeal. The Christmas Bowl appeal helps men, women and children living through conflict and displacement, which sadly, is reaching numbers of nearly 60 million people. The Christmas Bowl appeal is a way of forging a loving connection between our Christian communities here in Australia and people around the world living in hardships. Worship and planning resources will be available to assist churches to publicise and participate in the appeal. To register your interest call 1800 025 101 or email Turn on Javascript!

The Long Drive Up – DoIt4Stroke

Tania Shirgwin suffered a stroke at the young age of 47 in 2014. She never thought she would drive again because of it, but today, she has regained her independence and is about to set off on a road trip to Alice Springs. Her trip coincides with Australia’s National Stroke week (3-9 September). Tania drives to raise awareness for strokes and raise funds for the Stroke Foundation. Strokes are one of the leading causes of death and disability in Australia.

Fair Trade Adelaide/North Adelaide Map

The Adelaide City Council has released a fair trade map showing the shopping locations of Fair Trade items within the Adelaide, North Adelaide Area. IGA and Oxfam both advise they provide Fair Trade items. Some of the worst areas for either poorly paying workers or using slave labour are in the tea, coffee, chocolate and clothing areas. As a church we can’t effect this terrible industry that thrives off the vulnerable and the desperately poor directly but we can try to avoid the items that sell and reduce their hold on the vulnerable. Read labels of items to see what is in the product and look for the Fair Trade symbol wherever possible.
