Overdue Audited 2017 Financial Statements

If your congregation, faith community or ‘parish’ is yet to forward a copy of its audited 2017 financials to the Synod office please action this request as soon as possible.  Please note that the normal deadline for these is 30 June.  Financials should include a Balance Sheet, Income Statement (Profit & Loss) and an Audit Report.  Any questions are asked to be directed to Peter Harbison on (08) 8236 4282 (for country callers, 1300 766 956) or email: Turn on Javascript!

Police Checks for Upcoming Events

If a police check is required for a forthcoming event (e.g. Red Dove Café or SAYCO) please ensure that the CURRENT form (on the UCSA website) is lodged with the Screening Services Unit as far in advance of the event as possible.  Responses to check requests can, in some cases, take up to 4 – 6 weeks to come back. Red Dove Café: volunteers wanted

The Red Dove Café is looking for volunteers to fill three shifts per day for the duration of the Royal Adelaide Show (Friday 31 August-Sunday 9 September). Shifts include: 6-11am, 11am-4pm, and 3:30-8:30pm. The Red Dove Café has been a part of the Royal Adelaide Show for over 65 years. This is a great outreach mission for the church where 100% of the profits support mission projects in SA. If you are interested please contact Zoe Hessling by email: Turn on Javascript!.

Seminar on depression

Grange Uniting Church will be holding a seminar on depression and suicide. This informative seminar is presented by Rev Mark Boyce, a former nurse and chaplain who has worked in the mental health area for over 20 years. The seminar discuss topics that include: What is depression and what causes it, ways to deal with depression, and how to deal with the myths around suicide. This seminar will be held at Grange Uniting Church (5 Beach Street, Grange) on Tuesday 14 August at 7pm. Induction Service: Rev Alan Biglow

The induction service for Rev Alan Biglow will be at held at Woodville Uniting Church (44 Woodville Road, Woodville) on Sunday 12 August at 2:30pm. This service will be followed by an afternoon tea.

Bridgewater Arts Centre

Bridgewater Arts Centre is holding a music night featuring: 4tune8, a sibling string quartet; Kathie Renner, singer and songwriter; and Sevenfold, a fusion of rock, folk and rhythm and blues. Bridgewater Arts Centre launched in June, 2018, and is dedicated to support local artists and nurture an inclusive community through cultural events. This event will be held on Saturday 11 August, 7:30-9:30pm at the Bridgewater Arts Centre (407 Mount Barker Road, Bridgewater). Cost: adults $15, concession $10, under 12 years FREE. Westminster School: Marion campus development

Westminster School has unveiled plans for a $35 million development of its Marion campus, including construction of an Inquiry and Innovation Hub featuring state-of-the-art science labs and learning spaces to open in 2020. The proposed development represents the single largest investment ever made by an independent school in South Australia. The development – which forms part of Westminster’s Campus Masterplan – will guide the future growth of the school over the next three years and beyond.

Pastoral Partner Seminars

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Pastoral Partner Program, Mediacom presents two seminars to encourage, train and inspire Pastoral Care in congregations. Seminars will be held at Rosefield Uniting Church (2 Carlton Street, Highgate, 5063) on Friday 21 September, 7-9pm, and Saturday 22 September, 9:30 am – 3:30pm. Concerts at Kent Town

Concerts at Kent Town will hold their second concert for 2018 on Wednesday 15 August from 2-3pm and will feature clarinettist Katie Marshall and organist Andrew Georg. Concerts will be held at Wesley Uniting Church Kent Town (27 Grenfell Street, Kent Town). Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 and includes a generous afternoon tea. Resthaven’s big win

On Friday 27 July, Resthaven was named ‘Aged Care Provider of the Year, at the 2018 Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) Aged Care Awards for South Australia. The ACSA awards give focus to the key contribution of not-for-profit aged care service providers in services, innovation and research that benefit the Australian community. Resthaven’s win means that they have become finalists for the National ACSA Awards on Wednesday 5 September.

UnitingSA’s Flourish magazine

UnitingSA’s quarterly magazine, Flourish, is out now. Flourish celebrates the people and programs that make up UnitingSA’s organisation across South Australia. This edition features one man’s mental health journey, the launch of two community housing projects, and how you can help people in need through our Winter Appeal. To read online click here.

RYLA 2018 seminar

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a 7 day residential leadership seminar for young adults who are keen to exercise and develop their leadership abilities. Held at Nunyara Conference Centre, young adults will develop their abilities in public speaking, self-confidence, conflict resolution, creative thinking and so much more. ‘Engage Together: More than worship, more than Sunday’ concisely explains what intergenerational ministry means (not just intergenerational worship). It includes tools and examples for churches considering what their next steps could be in becoming more intergenerational as a whole community across the life of the church. Surrender Adelaide: Saints and Citizens

Surrender is a collective of Christians passionate about affirming, encouraging and inspiring people for incarnational mission and justice. This event exists to raise up Christians to live the radical call of Jesus. At the core of Surrender is the relationship with and involvement of Indigenous Australian people of this land. Explore the theme: "Saints and Citizens" with keynote speakers, Pastor Ray Minniecon, Melinda Cousins and Kim Hammond. The Uniting Aboriginal Islander Christian Congress is one of the hosting partners for Surrender Adelaide. Surrender Adelaide 2018 will be held at Marion Church of Christ (Alawoona Ave, Mitchell Park SA 5043) from Friday 12 October – Sunday 14 October. Lay Preachers’ Sunday

The first Sunday in August each year is Lay Preachers' Sunday in SA. Every congregation is encouraged to celebrate the contribution to the church that Lay Preachers make. Notes for liturgy and preaching for the day can be found on the UCSA website.

Mission Resourcing: big book Sunday – explore the Bible in Book Week

The UCSA Intergen Team have produced a free resource encouraging and recommending ways to celebrate and explore the Bible during Book Week (18 - 24 August), particularly on Sunday 19 August. It includes resources and activity ideas for use in Sunday services, intergenerational worship and age-specific programs. Download the free resource here.  

Mission Resourcing: new staff members

Sitiveni Rogoimuri will join the Mission Resourcing team in the role of ‘Transforming Mission Officer’. He has spent time studying theology and preparing for ministry, however, diverted his career and now comes to the UCSA office with strong experience in building relationships with other cultures including First Peoples, training and support, as well as a great heart for the Church. Sitiveni begins in the role on Wednesday, August 8.

Rev Dr Paul Goh will also join the Mission Resourcing team as the ‘Transforming Justice Officer’. Paul comes to us from the Port Philip East Presbytery in Victoria. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Korea before spending time ministering and studying both in Korea and the US. Paul brings a depth of understanding of CALD issues and justice to the role with Mission Resourcing and the wider church. Paul will begin his role on Monday, August 20.

The Disaster and Recovery Ministries team also appointed Helen Birch as a 0.2 FTE Administration Assistant. Helen is now part of the Pastoral Relations and Mission Planning team and will work in the office on Wednesdays.

DV-Alert Training

The next General DV- Alert two-day accredited training is on August 29-30 and is open to Frontline workers within Uniting Communities and the wider community. This two day general workshop will teach you how to recognise, respond to and refer domestic violence effectively. For more information, or to register, please visit the DV Alert website.

Meditation with Children and Young People Workshop

A Gift for Life: Meditation with Children and Young People is hosted by The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) Australia and is a workshop for teachers, school chaplains and anyone who would like to teach children to meditate. This workshop will be held at The Monastery Function Centre (15 Cross Rd, Glen Osmond SA, 5064) on Thursday 6 September from 9:30am-3:30pm.
