L to R: Synod office Pancake Day 'Flavour Off.' Featuring Peter Battersby (Executive Officer Resources),
Silvana Marveggio (Personal Assistant to the Moderator) and Philip Gardner (Acting General Secretary).

The lead up to Pancake Day is an exciting time for UnitingCare SA staff. Registrations to hold Pancake Day fundraising events have come in from many Uniting Church congregations, as well as schools, community groups and businesses which want to raise funds for UnitingCare organisations in South Australia.

Importantly, the UnitingCare Emergency Relief Centres and community service organisations are excited. They know that the funds raised will help them to provide much needed assistance to people who rely on their services.

When the funds are distributed, the workers and volunteers are also reminded that their efforts are valued and supported by many other people in the community.

Even though the official Pancake Day is Shrove Tuesday, fundraising events for the Pancake Day Appeal can be held any time up to Easter. Many groups hold their events on another day which is convenient for them.

A Pancake Day fundraising event can be as simple as getting together with a few friends for a chat. Instead of paying for coffees, bring a bottle of water and contribute the money you would usually spend on coffee to the Pancake Day Appeal.

Of course, it can also be a great chance to eat some pancakes or other treats – and have fun at the same time.

Today, Synod Office staff came together to enjoy pancakes and raise funds for the appeal. To add to the fun, three staff competed in a ‘Flavour Off’ to see who could create the pancake with the weirdest flavour toppings. The catch was that, whatever weird flavour combo they created, they had to also eat some: the winning flavour combination was vegemite, jalapeno, cheese twisties, garnished with a tomato and mustard sauce! (Congratulations Peter)
