UCA stallwart dies

Rev Bruce Prewer, Uniting Church minister and the author of many books of prayers, poems and reflections passed away in Sunbury on 11 September. Bruce was born in 1931 and ordained in 1955.

His passion for writing contemporary, ecumenical liturgy grounded in the Australian context influenced generations of Christians from the 1970s to the present day.

Works such Australian Prayers, Worship in a Caravan Park, Kakadu Reflections, Australian Psalms and Brief Prayers for Busy people reflected spiritual and cultural themes unique to the Australian experience.

His popular psalms included biblical psalms transposed rather than translated from ancient Israel to contemporary Australia. Others were original psalms, written in the Biblical spirit or re-shaping New Testament material into psalm form.

Bruce’s worship resources across the Revised Common Lectionary are an extensive collection of prayers, psalms, poems and sermons over the three-year cycle.

While his language and imagery is accessible and clear, encouraging Christians to speak openly and frankly to God, Bruce was a wordsmith and a poet.
