‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.’ (Acts 2:17, NRSV)

‘God in Christ has given to all people in the Church the Holy Spirit as a pledge and foretaste of that coming reconciliation and renewal which is the end in view for the whole creation.’ (Basis of Union, Par. 3)

In February 2021 at the annual meeting of the South Australian Synod, we have resolved that in the Shaping the Future – Strategic Priorities for the Uniting Church Synod of SA 2021 -2025, Caring for Creation should be one of our guiding principles through which all strategic priorities pass.

As we approach Pentecost Sunday, we are reminded of our Uniting Church’s vision toward the goal of reconciliation and renewal of the whole creation. In the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, our Church’s confession that Jesus is Lord comes together with its interconnected confession that, ‘the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it’ (Psalm 24:1, NIV). Humanity is not the master of the earth but is responsible to care for the integrity of creation. We, as God’s people are called to participate in the mission of the Holy Spirit to renew the whole creation.

Prior to Pentecost Sunday, this Friday on the 21st May, our young students across the country are calling on all Australians to demand that our governments take stronger action on climate change. In compassion and solidarity with the most vulnerable people, we encourage all members of the Uniting Church in South Australia to participate in the public mission of the Spirit through speaking out towards shaping our climate action plan. Here are three actions you can consider:

  • Read an invitation letter written by Raúl Sugunananthan, President of Christian Students Uniting, here.
  • Join Adelaide Schools Strike for Climate in their march on 21st May in Victoria Square at 11.00 am. Print out a big Uniting Church logo to carry – or add it to your own placard or banner (download here).
  • View and discuss a new YouTube production: Lessons from COVID-19 for the Climate Emergency.(ly/3vQ0Zq2) Developed by the Environmental Action Group in cooperation with UCFAMS and with support from the SA Synod. This series of short videos and accompanying discussion guides is designed for discussion by congregations and small groups to assist in responding to the Climate Emergency. You can read Assembly President, Dr Deidre Palmer’s launch speech here.

As we journey together toward the new season of Pentecost, may the Spirit enable all our people, young and old, to see a vision of the flourishing of the whole of God’s Creation, empower our parents, daughters, sons and grandchildren to speak a prophetic justice, and revitalise our church to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ for all creation.

‘Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth’ (Ps 104:1).
