Bacon and egg rolls bring joy in the bush!

When you’re running a community event in the outback, it can be a challenge to juggle all of the tasks.

William Creek, around 800 kilometers from Adelaide, has been hosting the annual Gymkhana and Motorkhana events for almost 60 years. It’s a vital opportunity for community connection. As committee member Helen explains: “We are in a very remote area, so it's important to have events where people can get together and talk about things.”

But a few years ago, the future of the event seemed uncertain. “We spoke to Frontier Services about how we were struggling a little bit,” Helen shares.

“They said perhaps they could help out, and they've been coming ever since!”

Thanks to support from people like you, Bush Chaplain Sunny and a team of Outback Links volunteers stepped in to lend a hand. Through them, your kindness has become an invaluable part of bringing the community together. The Gymkhana kicks off on a Friday in March with community tea.

“There’s pony rides for the kids, and then on Saturday, it’s all about the horse events,” Helen says. “In the afternoon, the motorbike events take over. And we always make sure there are games for those watching, so everyone gets to do something.”

The Outback Links volunteers you support play an important role. As Helen shares: “We’d be lost without them. They basically spend the whole Saturday in the kitchen and do just an amazing job. They cook bacon and egg rolls for breakfast, then sausages and steak sandwiches, and prepare all the other food and drinks. We’re very grateful.”

The event is also a great opportunity for Bush Chaplain Sunny to provide vital pastoral care to the community.

In this 20th year of Outback Links, your kind support of Bush Chaplain Sunny and his team brings joy and connection to William Creek, fostering lasting, life-changing friendships. Thank you!

Reflection of the Week - 15 April 2025

When you touch the hand of a returning friend, you already know that he will have to leave you again. When you are moved by the quiet vastness of a sun-colored ocean, you miss the friend who cannot see the same.
