Event details

Peter Kurti (Research Fellow, Religion and Civil Society at the Centre for Independent Studies, Sydney) will present the 2017 Robert Iles Memorial Lecture, “Reason, Repentance, and the Individual: Recovering the Christian Roots of Western Civilisation” at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 18 October. The lecture will be held at Burnside City Uniting Church and will be followed by supper.

In his lecture, Peter will examine debates around various issues which have provoked a lot of discussion about all kinds of human rights – including the right to religious liberty – but without looking more closely at how it is that we have these rights in the first place. Rights are accompanied by duties, and both are owed by, and to, individuals. He will describe the emergence of these obligations, and argue that they can be traced to Christianity whose roots continue to feed Australian culture and society and shape what we describe as “Western civilisation.”
