"Justice or Punishment?" is a social issue forum which will be held on Thursday 9 February, 7.30-10pm, at the Effective Living Centre in Wayville. Rick Sarre, Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at Uni SA will speak on "Restorative Justice - diversion before prision". Helen Glanville, the Chief Executive of Second Chances SA will focus on the topic of "Restoring Broken Lives".
In our society, value is often placed on seeking justice - however, we also seem to believe "do the crime, do the time", and that we are not happy unless someone is being punished. Do we concern ourselves with who gets swept up in that lust for punishment? How can we be more attentive to the appropriateness of jail terms? What are the alternatives? What happens to prisoners’ families after sentencing? How can prisoners be helped in the transition back into society? This forum will give us many ideas and actions to consider.
Forum tickets: $15 Adult, $12 concession, $10 ELC Friends & students. Supper from Seeds of Affinity is included in the ticket price.
