Beyond Limits - An Instant Hit with Schools

Posted in Uniting Venues

Beyond Limits Outdoor Education is fast approaching 10,000 participants annually as interest in our activity programs continues to grow. Operated by Uniting Venues SA and established in 2012, Beyond Limits provides programs at Adare (Victor Harbor), Nunyara (Belair), Tarooki (Robe), Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Deep Creek Conservation Park and more recently Douglas Scrub (Blewitt Springs) and Tuckerway (Port Vincent).

Our activities and programs are designed within the framework of a ‘Sequential Camps Experience’. For example, a school group can attend a year level four, five or six program camp at Nunyara, then progress to a year seven or eight program camp at Adare, then onto a year nine or ten tent camp program at Adare or Deep Creek and return to Nunyara for a leadership retreat in Years 11 and 12. Most Year 11 and 12 leadership retreats conduct their own program however Beyond Limits has been successful in providing team building activities of approximately 90 minutes in duration (generally on the morning of each day of their retreat). Tarooki, Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Port Vincent and Douglas Scrub provide alternate option for schools who are prepared to travel.

The philosophy behind the sequential camps experience is that students develop their skills from camp to camp, whilst not participating in the same activity twice, and receive consistent facilitation through the various year levels. Additionally, our facilitators get to know and engage with the students better through the process of the sequential camps and are encouraged to see the students mature and grow from year to year.

In our first year (2012) we hosted six programs at Adare. Each program required six to eight activities and facilitators. The activities were basic and the costs to run the activities were small. Adare was the obvious place to start due to the experience of staff and access to natural resources such as the beach, bike trails and a nearby river.

The past eight years have seen significant growth in the Beyond Limits program. During 2019 we hosted over 160 programs. We employ 35 permanent and casual staff and we provide a number of Catholic, Independent Christian Schools and government schools a sequential camps experience across a variety of year levels.
