Acknowledgement

Sometimes acknowledgement can be easy – giving an honest compliment to someone, admitting a minor mistake. But there are also times when it is more difficult – remembering to sincerely thank someone for a generous act, opening up about something personal or confessing a wrongdoing. This edition of New Times looks at how individuals, congregations and faith communities across the Uniting Church SA consider and practise acknowledgement.

Service

John 15:13 says, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. ” One of the ways we lay down our lives is through service. In the Uniting Church, we have many opportunities to serve in big and small ways – through demonstrations of kindness, responsibilities within congregations, contributions to social justice efforts, or support for UnitingCare organisations. Acts of service connect us with others, and help us to express God’s love in the world.

Resurrection

Over Lent and Easter, Christians across the world reflect on the new life and hope represented by Christ’s resurrection. We think of these on a personal level, seeing Easter as a time of renewing and deepening faith. In the Uniting Church, we are also reminded of our hopes for the lives of our churches. While many of our congregations age, we continue to see bursts of life within these communities through new projects or members, and new ways to engage in faith. This month, New Times reflects on resurrection, renewal and hope within the life of the Uniting Church in South Australia.

This month, New Times explores stories of joy, celebration and reflection as we approach the Christmas season.

Cry out

To ‘cry out’ is to scream or shout aloud, especially in pain or terror. To ‘cry out’ for something is to demand it in an obvious manner. ‘For crying out loud’ is an exclamation of anger or dismay. There are so many people, across the world and in our own backyard, who are crying out in these ways. In April, New Times focuses on justice and God’s constant presence in times of struggle.

Words of grace, hands of mercy - called to care

Called to care: Being human entails a physical, emotional and spiritual makeup. So when we consider our call to care we’re challenged wholistically. We can’t possibly minister to each of these elements on our own – that’s why working together as a Church is so important. New Times - December 2010

‘Tis a special season - to remember the light

‘Tis the season to be jolly, to celebrate, to be silly... to be stressed. ‘Tis the season to see the birth of Christ in its context and allow ourselves, as we breathe in the glossy manic behaviours of Christmas shopping and party hopping, to breathe out the true meaning – the love of God, given to us to bring peace on earth. May peace be with you this season.

Present past, focused future

past, present, future: We learn from the past. We set off from its firm foundations. We chart through whatever current tumults attend us. And we always push on, hoping that each day we’ll be the best of our former and present selves – and strive, perhaps, to be even better.

Doing life together - urban, suburban & beyond

Doing life together - it’s like being family, and it’s at the core of who we are as a Church. But doing life together means doing peace together & doing conflict together & doing grief together & doing joy together & so on. It’s the highs, the lows & the everything in between. That’s what it means to be a family, and that’s what it means to be a family of God’s people.

Championing Justice - without casting stones

Championing Justice: Justice comes in all shapes and forms. It applies here, there and everywhere, for young, old, different, indifferent, every skin colour, every language group. It is both lifestyle choices and policy decisions. And where there’s injustice – justice must be championed. Yes, Uniting Church SA is passionate about the business of justice - in all its forms.

Grounded church for major change: Faithfully fresh church expression

Future of faith: The Church is facing an increasing challenge of communicating with unchurched people. In the complex melting pot of ideas we dialogue with as part of broader society, Uniting Church SA is strategically investigating what it means to be a fresh expression of church, and what kind of faith future we’re hoping to be part of.
