Lay ministry for Moonta

With the retirement of Rev Ian Giles, Moonta Uniting Church Parish no longer has an ordained minister. Instead, the Parish Council endorsed a Lay Ministry Team to be its “pastor” for at least the next 12 months. The new contact number for the ministry team and parish is 0457 252 026.

Interfaith climate change statement

People of faith helped create the momentum that led to 196 countries agreeing to the Paris Agreement in 2015. On Monday 18 April, 2016, faith leaders around the world will present an Interfaith Statement to the United Nations in New York, calling for prompt action to sign, ratify and implement the Paris Climate Agreement. Now all people of faith can sign online to add depth and breadth to this global plea for action on climate change here. More information is available at interfaithstatement2016.org

Ecumenical leadership

The Global Ecumenical Theological Institute (GETI) recently provided a unique opportunity for a new generation of ecumenical leaders from across the globe to engage with each other by contributing papers to “Prospects and challenges for the Ecumenical Movement in the 21st Century: insights from the Global Ecumenical Theological Institute”.

The papers deal with a variety of themes, such as: pilgrimage, Asian Christology, food insecurity, just peace, and the shift of Christianity to the Global South. The collection provides significant insights into the challenges faced by the ecumenical movement and the prospects for its future. More particularly they articulate the perspective of a new generation of leaders in the ecumenical movement whose voice needs to be heard.

“Prospects and Challenges for the Ecumenical Movement in the 21st Century” is free for distribution provided the use is attributed, non-commercial and there is no change to the text. It is available through the South Australian Council of Churches or can be downloaded here.

A new resolution

At their meeting on Friday 18 March, the SA Presbytery and Synod Standing Committee carried the following resolution:

“The Presbytery and Synod Standing Committee resolved to:

“DETERMINE that the Home Endowment Fund contribution by SA-based UCA Ministers be voluntary.”

Prior to this resolution, Home Endowment Fund contributions were required by minister based in South Australia unless an exemption had been granted.

Ministers wishing to amend their existing Home Endowment Fund contribution arrangements should contact SA Synod Payroll office via email at Turn on Javascript! and the Assembly UCA Funds Management via email at Turn on Javascript! or phone on (03) 9251 5459.

The Presbytery and Synod is seeking an archivist. Jim Everett, who has served in this capacity for a number of years, has indicated his intention to retire as Synod archivist.

The archivist works in collaboration with the Historical Society. Any travel and other related costs can be reimbursed by the Synod.
