Event details

Esmond Dowdy continues the series 'The Relationship between Faith and Global Concerns' where he shares his reflections on how meaningful worship is to be experienced in postmodern times.

This will be a non-academic reflection on the changing understandings in spirituality/religion, and the consequent need for change in words used in worship. The topic is informed by the work of James Burklo, the Senior Associate Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life at the University of Southern California.

‘Postmodern’ is a word used to describe major changes in the underlying ways people think, especially the way they view truth and reality; for example, many Progressive Christians have left behind the paradigm of Supernatural Theism (the concept of a God out there, who can be invoked to intervene in human activities). But if the old paradigm is left behind, then the words used in worship will reflect this, and become congruent with new understandings. There is a lot of catching up to do ― old habits and old expressions die hard. This session will incorporate ideas for bringing the language of worship up to date, to be both relevant and authentic in postmodern times.

Esmond describes himself as primarily a life-long learner. After training at Parkin-Wesley College he was ordained in 1973 and ministered in country and suburban placements. He then followed the ‘worker priest model’ while he became a secondary level school-teacher and an education and academic administrator. For many years he specialised in student services across all campuses of what is now the University of South Australia. He has degrees in Teaching, Science, Theology and the Social Sciences for which his research topic was the influence of feminism on men’s self-perception. Among other things, Esmond is committed to social justice, supporting refugees and is a valued member of the Progressive Christianity Network of SA.
