God is Communion
During 2020 Rev Felicity Amery, General Secretary, Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of South Australia, initiated the Synod Art Project to consider how we experience our communion, our togetherness with God and one another and all creation in the everyday.
As part of the strategic priorities and conversations of the Synod of SA about what God is asking of the church, the Synod created an opportunity to engage with artists through the Centre for Music, Liturgy and the Arts under the theme God is Communion.
Thirteen artists produced over 30 pieces, many of which feature in the Synod’s 2022 calendar, and drew their inspiration from the main theme and were asked to also consider the following themes:
- Togetherness with God, one another and all of creation
- God as Trinity expressed as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
- God as an invitation for all people to hear the invitation, communion with God, one another and all creation
In seeking a conversational approach to the question of who the Synod is and what God might be doing in and through it over the next few years, the art project initiative created the opportunity for many conversations.
How we speak about God is of utmost importance. As Christians it is our ultimate point of reference for understanding and experiencing life and the world and it shapes our faith, constructs our values, moulds our identity and directs our practice.
