Urgent Prayer Needed for South Australian Bushfires
The Moderator of the Uniting Church in South Australia, Dr Deidre Palmer has urged the Uniting Church community to pray for the South Australian Bushfires in a Pastoral Note distributed today. Read the full note below:
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
May God’s blessings of hope and grace be with you as we begin another year in ministry together as the Uniting Church in South Australia.
I am contacting you in regards to the bushfires currently burning in the Adelaide Hills and the South East of South Australia. I have spoken with a number of people who are living in these areas, and they have asked that we offer prayers this Sunday for all those affected by the bushfires.
At the present moment, we are unsure of the full extent of the fires, but we do know that a number of people have lost their homes, a CFS truck has been destroyed and a number of CFS workers have been injured.
Thank you to those Uniting Church ministers and congregations who have already responded to those in their local communities who are affected by the bushfires. Hope Valley Uniting Church will have a particular pastoral focus this Sunday on the impacts of the bushfires.
A number of you have asked what you can do to assist in this emergency. I have spoken with Wendy Perkins, the Uniting Church employee responsible for coordinating Post Disaster Recovery and Relief. At this stage, we are asking for prayer. If there are any further ways we can be of assistance, we will be in contact with you via UC e-News or a follow-up pastoral note.
I invite you this Sunday and in the coming week to remember in your prayers, the South Australian communities affected by the fires.
We give thanks to God for the fire-fighters, police officers and other emergency service workers who are responding to the bushfire emergencies. We pray for strength and the necessary support for them to undertake their work.
We pray for comfort for those who have lost their homes and properties in the fire.
We thank God for people’s compassion, and their willingness to offer support to fellow South Australians who are at risk and in need, due to the fires.
We pray for all those who are offering pastoral and other forms of support.
