Current Exclusion List

The investment portfolio of the Uniting Church in SA is reviewed regularly, based on independent reports on the operations of companies, in particular, the areas of operation which may be inconsistent with the ethical filters of UCA SA. On this basis, the Uniting Church in SA has currently agreed to exclude the following companies from its investment portfolio:

  • AGL Energy Ltd – thermal coal
  • Aristocrat Leisure Ltd – gambling
  • BHP Group Ltd – thermal coal
  • Coles Group Ltd - gambling, alcohol and tobacco sales
  • Crown Resorts Ltd – gambling
  • Endeavour Group – gambling, alcohol
  • James Hardie Industries PLC – human rights (asbestos)
  • Jumbo Interactive Ltd - gambling
  • New Hope Corporation Ltd – thermal coal
  • Paladin Energy Ltd – uranium
  • Redcape Hotel Group Pty Ltd – gambling / alcohol
  • Sky City Entertainment Group Ltd - gambling
  • Soul Pattinson (W.H.) Ltd – thermal coal
  • South32 Ltd – thermal coal
  • Star Entertainment Group Ltd – gambling
  • Tabcorp Holdings Ltd– gambling
  • Treasury Wine Estates Ltd – alcohol
  • Whitehaven Coal – thermal coal
  • Woolworths Group Ltd – gambling, alcohol.

Congregations and organisations associated with the Uniting Church in Australia (Synod of South Australia) should seek to invest according to the Ethical Investment Policy.  For this reason, investment in any of the companies on the Exclusion List should be avoided.

Furthermore, congregations and organisations associated with church should assess all current investments against the EIWG policy and be diligent in checking business activities of any current or potential companies not included on the Exclusion List.

All companies on the list are from within the ASX300 (current 11 September 2019). There may be companies within the ASX300 whose practices do not meet the Ethical Investment Policy but have not yet been considered by the EIWG. Furthermore, there are likely to be companies outside the ASX300 whole practices do not meet the Ethical Investment Policy.

Please note, investment companies (eg Argo Investments Ltd) may be investing in companies on the exclusion list. Furthermore, managed funds should be avoided if the breakdown of the investible organisations within the fund cannot be identified.
