Annesley plans for a bright future

Dear Friends

As you would be aware, over the past six months the Annesley College Council has worked tirelessly to find a way forward for Annesley College.

We believe that this new model provides the best opportunity to secure the long term future of the College – even though it has immediate painful consequences for some people. However, along with Annesley, the Uniting Church expresses sincere regret to the students, staff and families who will be unable to continue at Annesley College in 2012.

A key aspect of this new model is the involvement of a tertiary institution. The Council’s preferred model is to work with the Uniting College for Leadership & Theology (UCLT) and, as such, the Council has offered an invitation for discussions about a possible co-location of the UCLT on the Annesley site.

Uniting Church SA Moderator  Rev Rob Williams says he supports plans to improve video game  classifications with the introduction of an R18+ rating.

The Uniting Church Moderator is in favour of the proposed changes to the rating system because he believes that it will make it simpler for parents to tell whether the content of games is appropriate for their children.

The Uniting Church in South Australia is calling on the Immigration Department to take urgent steps to make it easier for detainees to connect with community supporters in the wake of  alarming death- in- detention statistics.

The church believes an easing of visitation restrictions will reduce the stress and mental health issues affecting people in detention.

Uniting Church calls for compassion for refugees

The Uniting Church believes the government’s hardline stance against refugees is unhelpful.

“There seems to be a ground swell of anti-refugee sentiment that I find really disappointing,” says Andrew Clarke.

Andrew was recently appointed Project Officer Multicultural Ministries within the Uniting Church SA.  His role is to review what congregations are already doing to support refugees and migrants and to explore opportunities for collaboration.

A Uniting Church SA survey has revealed that only 32 per cent of South Australians believe that parents spend enough quality time with their children.
