Leadership has been an area of focus for Rev Nigel Rogers in his role as CEO/General Secretary of the Uniting Church in South Australia. It has also been a topic of interest for students and staff at Uniting College for Leadership & Theology, and for congregations and faith communities across SA.

In this article, Nigel shares news about an upcoming Uniting Church leadership conference that will explore ways of growing the church and spark leadership ideas.

I am pleased to announce the details of an upcoming Uniting Leaders conference (UL16).

UL16 will focus on the theme “Breaking Growth Barriers – Growing leaders to grow the Church” and will be held at Newlife Uniting Church on the Gold Coast. The four-day leadership event will include a mix of electives and main sessions, commencing on Tuesday 30 August at 1.30pm and concluding at 2pm on Thursday 1 September.

The conference will welcome guest presenters Mark and Karen Wilson to lead the main morning sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. Mark is the Director of Ministries for the Baptist Union of Western Australia; Karen is the Executive Minister of Riverview Church, one of the largest congregations in Australia. Prior to commencing in their current roles, Mark and Karen co-pastored a large Church of Christ community in WA.

In addition to UL16, a Senior Leaders Workshop will be offered on the evening of Thursday 1 September and on Friday 2 September. It will begin at 6pm on Thursday and conclude at 4.30pm on Friday.

The conference costs $120, which includes attendance and meals (it does not include accommodation). The Senior Leaders Workshop costs an extra $60.

UL16 is an incredible opportunity to learn more about church growth. Make sure you create room in your diary for this unique event in the life of the Uniting Church!

Towards 2027: taking the DeLorean out for a spin

Assembly General Secretary Colleen Geyer has delivered a wide-ranging reflection on the future of the Church at the Uniting Leadership and Theology Symposium in Adelaide. In a speech traversing sustainability, diversity, structure and identity Colleen asks can we as the Uniting Church be bold enough to listen to our history, step away from what has always been, be open to where God is leading us and step aside for the leaders who'll take us there?

Guidance on Church practices and the Novel Coronavirus

Whilst the situation with the spread of COVID-19 is concerning, there are simple and sensible actions we can take to help reduce the spread and help allay fears in our community. This is also an opportunity to take a fresh look at some of our practices and consider if there are more suitable alternatives that will help to maintain a safe church.
