Below are the news and notices from congregations, the SA Synod and the wider Uniting Church submitted for the Wednesday 27 April edition of UC e-News. Please note that events are listed separately here.

Memorial service

A memorial service for Jill Cheetham, Uniting Church Chaplain to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, will be held at 2.30pm on Friday 6 May at Woodville Uniting Church (Woodville Road).

Jill ministered as the Uniting Church Chaplain from April 2000 and acted as Head of the Pastoral Care Department for a number of years, mentoring and providing support for the pastoral visitors.

 

Free farming workshops

Do you own, manage or work on a farm in the Alexandrina or Onkaparinga area? Rural Business Support is providing a free program of workshops that looks at the business of running a farm and support for you as you plan for the future. These workshops are supported by the Uniting Communities Drought Assistance Package and will be held at Milang on Monday 2 May and Strathalbyn on Tuesday 3 May. Uniting College & Adelaide College of Divinity courses

Rev Prof Andrew Dutney, the Principal of Uniting College for Leadership & Theology, has shared a message in a flyer released by the College and Adelaide College of Divinity. The flyer also features information about courses offered through the institutions, and can be viewed here.

Information is also available about an upcoming unit titled “Power, sex and abuse”. Prof Amy-Jill Levine, Rev Dr Serene Jones, Dr Tanya Wittwer and Rev Tim Hein will all present parts of this unit, which includes seminars and sessions to be held from Thursday 7 to Monday 11 July. Reconciliation Sunday

In November 2006, the Uniting Church SA established Reconciliation Sunday, and requested church councils to include this in their worship calendars. Reconciliation Sunday is held on the first Sunday in Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) each year. Worship resources for 2016 will soon be available to download here; resources from previous years can also be accessed and downloaded using the same link.

 

Environment Day forums

To celebrate World Environment Day, a series of Sunday forums will be held at Morialta Uniting Church (26 Chapel Street, Magill) on Sundays in June (5, 12 and 19 June, 11am-12.15pm). The forums focus on exploring future energy supplies with the least damage to the environment – issues closely connected with the wellbeing of creation and of future generations.

 

Morialta Fellowship celebrates 60 years

Morialta Uniting Church Fellowship is celebrating its 60th birthday on Thursday 16 June and would like to contact previous members of Newton, Rostrevor, Finchley Park and Magill Fellowships. To celebrate this occasion, a “high tea” will be held in the Morialta church hall (26 Chapel Street, Magill) at 2pm. Pilgrimage: A Biblical Journey

Rev Dr Dean and Virginia Brookes will be leading “A Biblical Journey” – following the Apostle Paul to Greece, Malta, Sicily and Rome. Leaving on Thursday 28 April in 2017. They are inviting others to join them in this pilgrimage as they follow in St Paul’s footsteps. An optional extra six-day tour in Northern Italy visits Assisi, Siena, Florence and the Cinque Terra. The Australian Academy of Liturgy

The Australian Academy of Liturgy is an ecumenical association providing opportunity for discussion about Christian Liturgy, and particularly the understanding and development of liturgy in the Australian context.
Membership for 2016 is $45, $50 (couples) and $25 (retirees), and includes subscription to Australian Journal of Liturgy. The South Australian chapter of the academy, which meets four times a year. Mother’s Day Project

Adelaide West Uniting Church and Welcome to Australia are collecting “tokens of love” for mothers newly arrived in Australia this Mother’s Day (Sunday 8 May). They are seeking gifts (socks, soaps, chocolates, etc.), cards with positive messages, and donations to be used for small gifts. Items clearly labelled “Mother’s Day Project” can be delivered to:

Photos of Maughan Church

The closing service for Maughan is on Sunday 15 May.   The service will include an audio/visual photo presentation of Maughan through its life. We have photos and film from the opening worship service, but have less depicting the church’s later life.

So we need your help to complete the picture.

If you have photos or film of Maughan Church from any period, please forward them to the committee organising the closing worship. Photos will then be scanned and the originals returned to you. Any notes about the date and people in the photos will be greatly appreciated.

Workers' Memorial Day

On Workers' Memorial Day (Thursday 28 April), a service will be held commemorate lives lost to work-related death. The Uniting Church SA holds such services each year. Attendees are invited to contribute a personal item or photograph for the memorial display at this ecumenical service. The service will also feature a candle-lighting ceremony, a symbolic release of doves, memorial balloons, and light refreshments. This year’s service will take place at Pilgrim Uniting Church (12 Flinders Street, Adelaide) from 10am on Thursday 28 April.

History grants for 2016

The Uniting Church SA Historical Society is again inviting applications for history grants. Grants up to $1,000 are awarded each year to assist churches and leaders preserve, record and publish stories of Uniting Church congregations and agencies/organisations in South Australia. The closing date for 2016 applications is Friday 29 April. Application forms are available by sending your request to Turn on Javascript! or by phoning 8297 8472.

 

Remind, Refresh, Resource – Rosefield Uniting Church

Congregations from Adelaide are invited to gather for three days of resourcing at Rosefield Uniting Church. This event is hosted jointly between the Presbytery and Synod of SA and Rosefield Uniting Church from 10am on Friday 13 May to 1.30pm on Sunday 15 May. Keynote speakers include Rev Dr Sunny Chen and Craig Bailey.

Tickets for the event are now available. Each attendee must also select three electives (one each from 1, 2, and 3) using the event booking form here.

 

Celebrating 40 years – June 2017

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Uniting Church in Australia, a national history conference will be held in Adelaide on the June long weekend in 2017. The Uniting Church SA Historical Society is hosting this conference and the program is being planned by a steering committee of the new National UCA Historical Association. This celebration of 40 years will also explore the enduring legacy of the Protestant Reformation its 500th anniversary year.
