National Homelessness Week (1-7 August, 2016)

This week is National Homelessness Week and there are events around SA that people can get involved with – see a list here. Many Uniting Church communities help to support people who are homeless or currently “doing it tough”. Bindy Taylor interviewed Barb Dawe and Rev Sandy Boyce about activities at Pilgrim Uniting Church to support the homeless– read the article here. Free treasurers' workshops

You are invited to a free workshop for treasurers on GST and BAS on Friday 19 August. The booking deadline for this workshop has been extended until Tuesday 9 August. The session will run from 1pm to 4.30pm and be held at the Synod office (Level 2, 212 Pirie Street, Adelaide).

Bookings are essential (see email address below) and spaces are limited. Please click here to view a detailed invitation for the workshop.

• GST and BAS: Friday 19 August
• Financial Reporting and Budgeting: Friday 18 November (more details to be provided)
• MYOB: CANCELLED. Individual MYOB training may be available by appointment, but will attract a fee.

Save the date – 2016 RUSSLR Oration

Prof Christo Lombard, Professor of Christian Spirituality at the University of South Africa, is the guest speaker for this year’s RUSSLR (Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion, University of Adelaide) Oration. Other panel members at the event are Rev James McEvoy (Australian Catholic University) and Dr Liz Boase (Head of the School of Theology at Flinders University). The oration, which is a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and Pilgrim Uniting Church, will be held on Monday 26 September, 7.30-9.30pm, at Pilgrim Uniting Church. Cost is $10 or $5 concession, payable at the door.

 

Called to a year of prayer

The new board of the National Council of Churches Australia (NCCA) recently met for the first time, and their first resolve was to call churches to deeper prayer. The recent NCCA Forum heard a timely request for a Year of Prayer. The NCCA have therefore suggested churches follow this suggestion with a focus on Psalm 51:10.

Just a reminder that the majority of events are listed on the upcoming events list here rather than in the “News & notices” so this page can be kept short and concise.  Some of the events coming up this week are: Mostly Music @ Malvern, the ordination of Mike Wardrop, Messy Corner, and a Positive Parenting workshop at the Effective Living Centre. A few items from last week that you might want to catch up on!

2017 calendars - orders open now!

Orders for the 2017 Uniting Church SA calendar are now open! Each year, the Communications team produces this valuable resource, which includes photos of the Uniting Church SA community, important dates, lectionary readings, a message from the Moderator and General Secretary, and the Mission & Service Fund budget.

All congregations who wish to receive printed calendars must place an order by Friday 14 October, 2016. Printed calendars cost $1.50 each; a complimentary downloadable version will be made available online in November 2016. Congregations who do not place an order will not receive printed calendars.
