100 years for Ascot Community

Posted in News

On Sunday 2 August, Ascot Community Uniting Church celebrated 100 years of worship.

The church was established upon the closure of four congregations – Clovelly Park, Edwardstown, Plympton Park and Ascot Park. In 1956 the new church was built, and in 1963 a new church hall followed. The building was later redeveloped in 2002.

The anniversary service was full of mixed emotions as members spoke about their former church communities and how Ascot Community Uniting Church has evolved over the years. A speaker from each congregation addressed those gathered to share some of the history around the different church communities.

Members also reflected on their shared life together, and recalled 1965 as a significant time in the life of the church community – an extension was built at this time in order to meet the needs of the Sunday School, which had grown to include 400 children.

Uniting Church SA Moderator Dr Deidre Palmer spoke to those gathered, and shared a special message for the children of the congregation.

Light refreshments were served after the service, providing more time for past and present members to share memories with one another and with visitors.
