Ample learning for Annesley students at Adelaide Zoo

Posted in Culture

On Saturday 3 March, families from the Annesley Early Learning Centre gathered at Adelaide Zoo ready to explore and gather information to support the children’s investigation into how homes reflect the local environment and the occupants’ needs.

Parents and children observed the animal enclosures looking for clues to answer their investigations:

  • What is the animal’s environment?
  • What resources are there in the environment which they can use to build their homes?
  • How does the home suit the animal’s needs?

This excursion was an opportunity to gather and record information that would support and extend the children’s discussions and play opportunities back at school over the coming weeks.

Excursions such as these enrich the learning opportunities for learners of all ages and are a vital and frequent feature of Annesley’s learning program. Students have many opportunities to apply their learning from inside the classroom to real life situations by gathering information to extend their thinking, making connections with resources in the community and observing and recording real world data to expand their understandings.

It was heartwarming to see parents enthusiastically sharing in their child’s learning with their teachers on a beautiful morning. What a joyous celebration of community learning!

International Mission Update - A Light for Peace

The new 'normal’ that we have entered into can certainly bring changes to how we as a church undertake international mission. However, despite this challenge we encourage reflection on the importance of partnerships, solidarity for social justice issues and ecumenical sharing.

The Art of Listening

A couple of years ago I was participating in a course which had a smattering of people from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background. I would have said that they were good participants in class discussions but not the most active ones, and I gave little thought to it.

Celebrating Refugees Contributions to Society

A UnitingCare Emergency Relief Centre was needed in the Port Adelaide-Enfield area of Adelaide. And that's when Lefevre UC and volunteers from Port Adelaide UC stepped up.
