Adare Uniting Church has a long history of worship, ministry and service in the Victor Harbor community.

On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October, the Adare congregation held celebratory events to mark the church’s 60th anniversary.

Over 100 people attended the Saturday concert, which included musical performances and poetry recitals. Music was shared by the adorably-named Adarables band, and singers Jasmine Wiese, Kiara Wiese and Andrew Vonow. Children and youth presented a puppet show and a performance of “This Little Light of Mine”. A choir, a female duet, a male trio and a pianist also contributed their talents to the event.

The concert concluded with a colourful performance by a marching band from Adare, and a message of thanks to those who attended and contributed to the event.

The following morning, Adare held a special service of recognition. Eight of the people attending the celebratory service were present at Adare 60 years ago! They were joined by many others – members from different generations who have contributed to the life and ministry of the church in a variety of ways.

Since the Adare choir was founded in 1954, music has formed a key part of the church’s life – and it was also a component of the Sunday anniversary service. Choir members performed two items, and Jasmine and Kiara Wiese sang “A Prayer for Adare”, a new song written by Jasmine especially for the occasion.

Children also contributed to the service, joining with adults to create a circle of coloured ribbons representing friendship and strength.

The Sunday service included a message from Rev Trevor O’Brien, a past minister at Adare Uniting Church. In his message, Trevor likened Adare to germinating and growing as seeds sown in pastures. He shared his belief that working and worshipping together has grown the church into a family, and he encouraged the congregation to continue growing and flourishing.

The Sunday service was followed by lunch, which included time for sharing memories, memorabilia and photos. A celebratory cake was cut by the current minister, Rev Susan Doughty, and Rev Claude Cotton, who was minister at Adare from 1964-67. Many people enjoyed the occasion, being able to catch up with old friends and relive old memories.

Reflection of the Week - 16th April 2024

Don’t you wonder sometimes how our covenant Lord who is God – Creator, Master, and Teacher, can and does create from nothing and does not need anything or anyone but is helplessly in love with you?
