Spiritual questions
If you are searching …?
What is the meaning of life? Is there really a God? What does Jesus have to say for the 21st century? Why is there so much suffering in the world? There are a lot of spiritualities on offer these days, but where can I find one that will truly satisfy the restlessness within me and lead me on a good path?
If you have arrived at this web site with some of these questions within you, then welcome! We like to think that the Uniting Church is a place where we can bring our deep questions about life, and our yearning for "something more." We don't pretend to have all the answers, but we do see ourselves as a "pilgrim people", always on the way to the fullness of life Jesus Christ invites us to, and always welcoming those who wish to travel with us.
Most of us have found our way into, or stayed with a congregation simply because we choose to journey in community rather than alone. We don't think that we are perfect, and we are striving to understand what it means to be church in 21st century Australia, but we do care about people, and about trying to work for a world where all may live with fullness of life.
One of the best ways to find company for life's questions is to connect with a local minister or church congregation. To find a church near you simply use the Find a Church function on this website. Many of our congregations offer short courses that provide a basic introduction, or a way of going deeper into the Christian faith. We have many different styles of congregational life and worship.
We also have a small, congregational-based Spirituality Centre. This is attached to our Mission Resourcing Network and it offers a program of events, a quiet and reflective monthly worship service, and a passion for helping people discover the sacred in the ordinary. For further information phone Ann Siddall on 8234 1199 (mornings) or annsiddall@bigpond.com
And if you enjoy exploring, studying and discussing issues of faith then contact our theological College, Parkin Wesley on 8416 8420 and enquire about their courses and programs.
A prayer
I am here because I am searching for answers,
hoping that I am not all alone in this vast universe,
and wanting to find the faith, hope and love
that I sometimes see in others,
and long to find in myself.
I don't want to sign up for anything yet,
or commit to something I'm not sure of,
but I'm here because my experience of life
tells me that there has to be "something more",
something that will make sense of how I'm feeling.
God, hear my prayer. Look into my heart
and see the longing that is in there;
look into my mind and see the questions,
row upon row, waiting for answers,
look into my eyes and tell me who I am.
I'm dipping my toe into the water here
and it feels pretty risky!
But if what they say about Jesus is true,
then coming to you just as I am
is the best way to come.
So hear my prayer, Holy One.
Hear my heartfelt longing for a response
that will tell me that I am loved;
hear my fervent plea for acceptance
of my questions and my struggles.
Here I am.
Here You are.
May this be is a place of connection.
AMEN.
